The server will be offline for 3-6 hours while these upgrades are taking place. The upgrades will add more processing power to the server which will help increase it’s speed and performance time as well as make it better suited to run process-heavy WordPress powered sites (which most of our customers have).

If you are not sure which of our servers your account is on, you can find out by logging into your cPanel and looking for the server name under the Stats heading on the left side.

All accounts on the server will be checked after the upgrades take place and the server comes back online, but if you notice any problems with your site after 7am on Sunday morning, please contact us to let us know.

This includes things like duplicate invoices or overdue/soon due notices on accounts already paid. We fixed the issue today so this won’t be happening any more. A bunch of emails went out early this morning before we found this fix, though, so if you received an invoice or notice on something you already paid, please just ignore it.

The data center where the server is hosted is currently having issues, which is why the server is down. It is being worked on and should be back up soon. I’ll update here again if there’s more news.

Here’s the official update:

At approximately 8 A.M. EST a segment of our data center experienced a power outage. Shortly after that we realized the city had experienced a power outage as well which attributed to the loss we saw in the NOC. We immediately went into generator power and we are still currently running on generator.

What happens when there is power loss is that we immediately go into UPS for a few minutes meanwhile the generator powers up. The UPS ensures no service disruption meanwhile the generator turns on. This happened normally but approximately 40% of the servers tripped during this process. Power loss and going into UPS followed by generator power has happened a few times in the past. But we have never experienced what has happened today – the power surge during this outage was extremely high.

We are meeting with our electrical engineers as we speak to analyze the situation to learn exactly what happened. We still have the data center running on generator as the power in the city could still be unstable and we do not want to risk any further outages. As many of you know these kind of issues do not happen often and we are taking this incident very seriously. The data center is equipped with a high level of UPS and generators are in place to ensure maximum uptime. We apologize for the inconveniences as we know this has effected a lot of you and your clients. We will ensure we find out in detail what happened, resolve it completely and put measures in place so it doesn’t repeat again.

If you are just concerned with fixing the security issue you may download and replace these files:

But you should really upgrade everything as 2.5.1 contains many bug fixes and improvements, including:

  • Performance improvements for the Dashboard, Write Post, and Edit Comments pages.
  • Better performance for those who have many categories
  • Media Uploader fixes
  • An upgrade to TinyMCE 3.0.7
  • Widget Administration fixes
  • Various usability improvements
  • Layout fixes for IE

Also, as of 2.5 they’ve added an extra security measure to WordPress.  This involves adding a “secret key” to your wp-config.php file.  This measure will improve cookie security.  All you need to do is go to this website and copy and line it shows you into your wp-config.php file underneath the database info.  Every install of WP you have should have a different random “secret key” (you can just keep refreshing the website to get new ones).  And don’t worry, you’ll never need to remember this key so the more random the better.

It’s currently being monitored very closer should any other issues pop up. Also, we have verified that the WordPress comment notification problem has been fixed and notifications are now being received.

We want to let you know that the server transfer is complete. We apologize for any issues you have been experiencing in the past few days. We are working on stabilizing the server right now. It was better today than yesterday and it should only improve from now on. This transfer has been bumpier than we anticipated and we truly apologize for this. We are working 24/7 to get things back to normal.

As for other issues that have been reported, we have fixed most everything. The only open issue right now is people not receiving comment notifications from WordPress blogs. We are working to fix this.

Due to the transfer some permissions have changed. This can cause issues with uploading, editing themes or certain plugins (like the Image Headlines plugin). This is a very easy fix. You just need to change the permissions on your uploads folder (and any sub folders) and image-headlines folder to 777. To edit theme files, change the permissions to 666. If you don’t know how to do this , please contact us at hosting@swankwebhosting.com or submit a helpdesk ticket. We will fix this for you ASAP.

If you have lost any posts or comments we are sorry about this. The transfer wound up taking longer than anticipated due to holiday weekend. However, these are easily retrievable by subscribing to your feeds (yourdomain.com/feed and yourdomain.com/comments/feed). We’re sorry for the inconvenience, it’s not something that will happen again. Since the transfer has been complete since yesterday, there should be no more issues as far as posting entries/comments.

We had a nice (albeit busy) break ourselves, but it’s back to business as usual now.

You may have noticed (unless you are reading from the comforts of your feedreader, in which case click on over!) that we have completely redesigned our website. The redesign included completely starting from scratch with our portfolio and blog. Both are now more easily browseable, with much more info available about our projects. Plus the site as a whole is a bit lighter and speedier than it used to be.

Please stay tuned for news about our new designers, but as of right now most of our current designers are available. Spots fill up fast, so write in soon! Anyone who wrote in during the break should be hearing from/already heard from one of our designers; you will be first in line.

We’re going on vacation here starting December 19th until January 2nd. This is a general notice, not specific to each designer, so if you are a current client wondering about your project timeline, you’ll need to ask your designer her specific vacation period. It does mean we won’t be taking new inquiries, though. Feel free to write in if you would like to get in line (we WILL have many openings for Jan.), but your inquiry will not be answered until January.

We will be back in the new year with some VERY exciting new developments like new designers and a completely redesigned and revamped website. This past year has been such a year of growth for us and we want to expand our business and our practices to compensate for this growth and to give our clients the best service possible.

We also want to let you know that this Friday (the 21st) is the last day we are accepting candidates for the positions we are hiring for. Thanks to everyone who has written in so far! You’ll be contacted after Christmas if we have further questions for you.
