2.5.1 was released today, so if you been waiting to upgrade, now’s the time to do it. This new release contains one important security fix for 2.5, so it’s important you upgrade soon.
If you are just concerned with fixing the security issue you may download and replace these files:
But you should really upgrade everything as 2.5.1 contains many bug fixes and improvements, including:
- Performance improvements for the Dashboard, Write Post, and Edit Comments pages.
- Better performance for those who have many categories
- Media Uploader fixes
- An upgrade to TinyMCE 3.0.7
- Widget Administration fixes
- Various usability improvements
- Layout fixes for IE
Also, as of 2.5 they’ve added an extra security measure to WordPress. This involves adding a “secret key” to your wp-config.php file. This measure will improve cookie security. All you need to do is go to this website and copy and line it shows you into your wp-config.php file underneath the database info. Every install of WP you have should have a different random “secret key” (you can just keep refreshing the website to get new ones). And don’t worry, you’ll never need to remember this key so the more random the better.

I found you through Karen Sugarpants (oh man she has got to get a kick out of that when someone with a serious question has to type, “sugarpants”
) — my question is this: I’ve been EXTREMELY skiddish about upgrading because my template has become somewhat fragile. . .half the time if I try a new plugin it hoses the presentation on at least one browser.
Should I be concerned with this? Or does it seem pretty unusual that it has an adverse affect?

Well, if your template is as fragile as you say, I can’t promise there won’t be issues. But from my experiences upgrading to 2.5 (I’ve probably upgraded over 50 blogs at this point) I haven’t run into any issues.
If you make sure all your plugins work with 2.5 (most of them should by now and if they don’t there’s probably a good chance they aren’t going to be updated ever) you should be okay. Just make sure to turn off all plugins before the the upgrade and after the upgrade activate them one at time to make sure they aren’t screwing anything up.
Unless you currently have a really old version of WP, there really shouldn’t be any theme issues. WP has deprecated a few template tags as of 2.3 (mostly ones that call links, categories or archives lists), so you may want to look at this page and make sure your theme isn’t using any of the old tags:

Here’s the list of plugins that work with 2.5: http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Plugin_Compatibility/2.5
I know it can daunting, but it’s really worth upgrading especially as far as security, but also 2.5 has a ton of nice features.
Good luck upgrading!
